Watching Meteors #1: Discovering the Perseid Meteors

Did you know that prior to 1837, few knew the Perseids were an annual event in the sky? Edward Herrick, a local bookstore owner in Connecticut, began to look for reports of meteor showers occurring around August 9th after seeing a particularly stunning night of activity. But meteor-shower hunting was a popular activity at the time, and he was only one of the many discoverers.

Watching Meteors #4: Dark Nights for the Perseids

Earth should be in the thickest part of the stream for many hours centered around 3 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on August 12, but the best time to look up is between midnight and dawn on both nights. Two much weaker showers are also active during this time, the Delta Aquariids and Kappa Cygnids, and there are always sporadic meteors as well.
